Strategic Mineral Intelligence
Timor-Leste lies within an active continental collision zone where rapid uplift exposes mineralized units rarely visible elsewhere. This creates unusually high surface expression for multiple deposit types.
- Cyprus-type VMS Cu–Au–Ag systems
- Podiform chromite in serpentinite belts
- Epithermal Au–Ag quartz-calcite veins
- Lateritic Ni over ultramafics
- High-grade Mn oxide alluvials
Meeting & Working With Local Communities
First Contact Matters.
Always identify and visit the Chefe de Suco (village head) before discussing fieldwork. Arriving unannounced or bypassing leadership can shut down access permanently.
Bring time, not urgency. Coffee, betel nut, or a shared meal is often the gateway to trust. Geological discussions come later.
- Dress modestly in rural areas
- Avoid photographing people without permission
- Use senior titles when addressing elders
- Small gifts are acceptable, cash payments are sensitive
Field Safety & Reality Checks
- Saltwater crocodiles present in northern rivers and estuaries
- WWII unexploded ordnance remains in remote uplands
- Seasonal flooding can isolate regions rapidly
- Medical evacuation options are extremely limited
Never enter caves, ridges, or forest tracks without explicit local approval. Sacred (lulik) sites carry serious cultural consequences if violated.
