RIDGE-SET PROTOCOL
Feb 2, 2026: A tactical guide for the Tucson Mountain Moonset from the Pima Community College Upper Lot.
The “Sniper Nest” Advantage
While Ajo Way provides breadth, the Pima West Upper Lot provides height and intimacy. Perched at 2,580 ft, this vantage point removes the clutter of neighborhood power lines and places your lens directly across the valley from the Tucson Mountain foothills. This is the optimal spot for the “Moon-on-the-Peaks” shot because the elevation allows you to see deep into the canyons as the moon descends.
Pima CC West Campus – Lot 4 (Upper)
The Convergence Window
Balancing the morning alpenglow against moon luminance.
07:15 AM – Peak Moment
The rising sun hits the “A” Mountain behind you, bouncing light onto the Tucson Mountains in front of you. This is when the moon and the peaks share equal light values.
07:25 AM – Ridge Cut
The moon physically disappears behind the ridgeline. From this lot, the “Ridge-set” occurs 35 minutes before the official horizon moonset.
THE 5X MANDATE
Your iPhone 16 Pro features a dedicated 120mm telephoto lens. At Pima West, a wide shot (1x) makes the moon look like a small dot. The 5x lens compresses the distance, making the moon appear massive compared to the mountain peaks.
Lens Effectiveness (Scale)
ProRAW Max (48MP)
Mandatory for this shot. The moon has high-frequency detail that HEIC compression will smear. You need the raw data to pull texture from the craters later.
AE/AF Lock
Long-press the moon on your screen until ‘AE/AF LOCK’ appears. This stops the phone from hunting for focus as cars drive past behind you.
EV -2.0
The moon is much brighter than you think. Slide the sun icon down significantly to avoid “blowing out” the whites.
The 5-Minute Commuter Protocol
Arrival & Positioning
Enter Pima West from Anklam Rd. Drive directly to the highest northwest corner of the lot. Face your car West.
Technical Lock
Step out of the car. Use the roof or the door frame as a stabilizer. Engage 5x Zoom. Toggle ProRAW on.
Burst Capture
Shoot in bursts. The atmosphere is turbulent in the morning; taking 10 shots ensures at least one is perfectly sharp.
Exit & Proceed
Back in the car. Head east on Anklam to Silverbell, then North to Grant. You are back on schedule for Sungemstone.
Moon vs. Ridge Line Clearance
Why the Ridge Matters
The Tucson Mountains aren’t a flat line. From Pima West, you are looking at jagged volcanic peaks. If you wait until 7:30, the moon will already be hidden behind a specific peak. The “Golden Gap” is when the moon is less than 2 degrees above the ridge—this is when the scale looks most “impossible” and impressive.
