Hexactinellid and Brachiopod Goethite Pseudomorph Fossils from The White Desert

✦   Newly Documented Fossil Assemblage   ✦

White Desert Fossil Collection

White Desert  ·  Late Cretaceous (~75 Million Years)
Two distinct fossil types from the same ancient Tethyan seafloor — both newly emerging from the White Desert — a region known for exceptional goethite mineralization of ancient marine fauna.
Specimen I  ·  Glass Sponge Fossil

Hexactinellid Glass Sponge

Class Hexactinellida  ·  Goethite & Manganese-Oxide Pseudomorph
Locality White Desert
Formation White Desert Chalk
Age Maastrichtian
Mineralization Goethite / Mn-Oxide

These remarkable specimens are fossil glass sponges of the class Hexactinellida, preserved within the ancient Tethyan seafloor chalk of the White Desert. The original siliceous sponge skeleton has been replaced by goethite and manganese-oxide minerals, producing a deep blue-black coloration with a subtle metallic luster.
