The Restoration Workflow
Validated laboratory stages required for professional specimen recovery.
Hydration (Pre-Soak)
Submerge specimen in 0ppm Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water for 4–24 hours before chemical cleaning.
Rationale: This allows clean water to fill growth tubes and fractures via capillary action. It creates a hydraulic buffer that prevents aggressive chemicals from being “sucked” deep into the crystal, making post-cleaning rinsing much easier.
The Active Wash
Apply the chosen reagent bath using the Calculated Recipe below.
Expert Note: Dithionite solutions (Iron Out/Waller’s) lose potency within 24–48 hours. Adding “excess” powder does not increase efficacy; refresh the bath instead if staining persists.
Deep Leaching
Soak in fresh RO Water for 120+ hours (5 days), changing the water every 24 hours.
Critical Risk: Trapped iron salts in Beryl tubes will re-oxidize into an irreversible yellow/brown stain if not fully leached out before the specimen is dried.
