RafterSlide Project

Ceiling-Suspended Storage Doors

A lightweight, functional solution to hide rafter storage using thin wood paneling. This guide provides a custom design for 24″ x 24″ sliding panels suspended directly from your ceiling joists.

1. The Design Blueprint

Since you are hanging from rafters, you cannot screw the track directly to the uneven joists. You must install a Header Board (Blocking) first to create a level mounting surface.

2

Total Coverage Width: 48 inches

Key Design Specs

  • Panel Material: 1/4″ Lauan or Birch Plywood (Lightweight)
  • Track System: Double-J Aluminum or PVC Bypass Track

3. Build Process

Follow these steps to ensure your doors slide smoothly and hang securely.

Phase 1

Install the Header (Blocking)

Your ceiling rafters are likely spaced 16″ or 24″ apart. You cannot install the track directly to them because the track might not align with the wood, or it might sag in between.

  • Measure the total width of your opening.
  • Cut a 2×4 (or 2×2 for lighter weight) to this exact length.
  • Use 3-inch wood screws to secure this board perpendicularly across the bottom of your rafters. This creates a solid, continuous strip to mount your track.
  • Tip: Paint this board the same color as your ceiling before installing for a cleaner look.

Always verify weight limits of your rafters before hanging storage loads.
